Help the Penan

For more than 20 years the nomadic Penan of Sarawak have blockaded roads to stop loggers destroying their forest home. Their blockades have been repeatedly destroyed by police. The latest blockade was mounted in August to prevent a Samling subcontractor from entering the forest. Police destroyed a blockade in another area in June, only to see the local Penan erect another in July.

The Malaysian authorities have told timber giant Samling that the company will lose its 'certificate of sustainable management' unless it resolves its long-running conflict with the Penan, stars of tonight’s BBC television show ‘Tribe’. Without the certificate the company risks being unable to export wood to European and other countries.

If you would like to help the Penan:

1. Please write a polite letter to the chief executive of the Malaysian Timber Certification Council, asking him to revoke the certification of Samling's Sela'an-Linau Forest Management Unit on Penan land:

Scambaiters - scamming the scammers

I recently found this beautiful website. We have all had the silly scam emails where someone gets in contact with you in the hope you will help them transfer millions of dollars out of their country on behalf of some senator or wealthy doctor with the promise of a healthy slice of the pie for your trouble.

This website is dedicated to scambaiters. A scam baiter is a person who decides after being contacted by one of these imbeciles to mail them back in order to string them along, get them to do stupid things and maybe get them to send the baiter some money!

Have a look and all will become clear - the Trophy Room is the place where you can read correspondence between scammers and scambaiters, needless to say there are some hilarious outcomes complimented by some truly inspired Photoshop work.

This is absolutely disgusting. A teenage girl actually stoned to death by up to 1000 "men" as she is on her way home, the reason? She had a relationship with a Sunni Muslim boy (of different faith to her community which is Yezidi).

These snivelling wretches will never be brought to justice, and how can they be when the police helped the mob to kill her. This is not an uncommon thing in Iraq and Kurdistan and the sad thing is it doesn't look like stopping. Women have the power to stop their partners doing this type of thing and hopefully the next generation will be exposed to 'western' culture enough to stand up for their rights, and not be brainwashed into thinking they are second class citizens to weak men under the fear of religious mumbo jumbo.
